Today, the NFL is made up of 32 teams that play a 17-week regular season. The merger was finalized in time for the 1970 season, forming one league under the NFL with teams split up into the National Football Conference and American Football Conference. The NFL began a merger with the American Football League in 1967, which brought about the Super Bowl game which would pit teams from both leagues in an AFL-NFL World Championship Game. The league initially awarded the championship to the team at the top of the regular season standings before implementing the NFL Playoffs and the NFL Championship game in 1966.
